Things weren’t always like this.
Once upon a time, Zeppelin was playing coffeehouses. Music was played on a little-known synthetic resin called vinyl. And radio DJs ruled the universe.
This is the story of one such DJ—a legendary Brit named John Peel.
And how you just gained access to his insanely huge record collection...
Welcome to The Space, a new website/shrine dedicated to one of the UK’s most prodigious music guys and his impossibly massive vinyl collection, which happens to be available for download now for the first time ever.
Ah yes, the late, great John Peel—he was best friends with rock stars. Maniacally devoted to music. A real-life cross between Cusack in High Fidelity and Lester Bangs in Almost Famous. The kind of guy who was singing the lyrics to “London Calling” six months before the Clash’s first gig. And now, 37 years’ worth of his music library is yours.
The site is set up to look like the actual shelves in Sir Peel’s former studio, categorized from A to Z. Scroll through, choose an album and click on it. From there, you can listen to the entire thing on Spotify and/or download it on iTunes.
So far, only the “A’s” have been released, but expect a new letter of the alphabet and its corresponding albums to be unveiled each week.
Sorry, Frank Zappa.
