Five Lighthouses They’ll Let You Sleep In

Sometimes, you just need peace and quiet. A getaway. Find a little place on the water or whatever. You know, like a... lighthouse. Yeah, you should rent one of those this summer. And if (for whatever reason) you need help finding the right one, here are five available for rent right now.

YACHATS, OREGON

Heceta Head Lighthouse

This 120-year-old beauty is on the National Register of Historic Places, and its beam casts a light 21 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. You’ll be staying in the adjacent keeper’s house (it’s a B&B now), but you’ll have your run of the actual lighthouse. You’re totally building a fort in there.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN, NEW YORK

Split Rock Lighthouse

Consider this your seclusion play. No restaurants. No bars. They don’t even allow non-guests anywhere near the property. Just you, a big stone fireplace and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re keeping wayward ships from crashing into you.

RICHMOND, CALIFORNIA

East Brother Light Station

With a view of the San Francisco skyline, this Victorian lighthouse has been active for over 133 years. Your quarters: the original fog signal building, just a few steps from the lighthouse. They’ll treat you to champagne upon arrival, dinner, wine, breakfast, everything. First one to Instagram #thatlighthouselife loses.

NARRAGANSETT BAY, RHODE ISLAND

Rose Island Lighthouse

In return for your services as a volunteer lighthouse keeper, you’ll stay in either the first-floor museum or the second-floor keeper’s quarters. Also: the island’s home to an abandoned Navy torpedo station where explosives were stored, so you’re not allowed to go exploring. Which... maybe bring good company.

TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN

Mission Point Lighthouse

On a remote and sandy beach off the coast of Lake Michigan lies a little lighthouse that sleeps two and looks like a schoolhouse. And in exchange for some housekeeping (plus 200 bucks a week), you can stay there. Who knew there were no free rides in lighthousing.
