Picture a hotel. Lots of mysterious doors. Behind one: maybe you’ll see a breakdance battle. Behind another: oh, hey, you just won a trip to Phuket. You must be playing Discovery Doors by Renaissance Hotels, an online experience with lots of exclusive prizes. All you need is some keys...
Big news: your hospitable friends from Atelier Ace just crossed the pond with their new Ace Hotel London Shoreditch (left). But they’ve also crossed the Caribbean in the form of Panama City’s new American Trade Hotel. So we’ve taken the liberty of breaking them down, tale-of-the-tape-style...

The Location
Ace London: Smack in the heart of Shoreditch (think of it as Portlandia, British-style) just down the road from Regent’s Canal.
American Trade: 157 steps from the beach (yes, we counted) inside a 96-year-old former department store built by one of Latin America’s greatest architects.
Edge: American Trade. Beach trumps canal any day. Plus, we’re pretty sure Panama has a canal, too...

The Scene
Ace London: Artists, markets and graffiti murals on every corner—and at night, the current it-zone of London nightlife.
American Trade: The 300-year-old neighborhood of Casco Viejo, full of plazas, saltwater breezes, fresh fish, churches and more plazas.
Edge: Ace London. Always err on the side of art. And gin.

The Amenities
Ace London: In-room record players and vinyl collections; food from two heavy-hitting London restaurateurs; on-site flower shop; 24-hour room service.
American Trade: Ocean-view suites; pool; in-house jazz club; thread counts approaching quadruple digits.
Edge: Push. The ocean’s great. But so’s listening to a Clash record on your hotel room floor at 3am.
