Finland: it's up there pretty high on the list of trendy destinations right now. And the Northern Lights: classic. Scoping out the Northern Lights whilst floating on a partially frozen lake in Finland: whoa. Take a look. Your once-in-a-lifetime experience is brought to you by the intrepid travelers at Off the Map Travel. It starts with your arrival in Rovaniemi, a snow-covered town known for, among other things, being the "official hometown" of Santa Claus. From here, travel by dogsled, reindeer or the more realistic shuttle to the Arctic Treehouse Hotel. Your suite is decked out in the appropriate amount of fur, which you'll take advantage of while taking in the winter wonderland outside your floor-to-ceiling window. Dinner is served Lappish picnic-style in that snow-covered wilderness. Dessert, however, is a treat for the eyes. First, someone will hand you a head-to-toe, high-quality, very warm rescue suit. Let's call him Steve (the someone, not the suit). A short, candlelit walk leads you to a frozen lake with a hole cut into the ice. "Get in," Steve will say. And after a moment of hesitation, staring at the frigid water below and the Aurora Borealis above, you'll listen. You can go now, Steve. |
