Snowshoeing Transylvania and the French Alps

Snowshoes are like the roller skates of winter. Underrated, but you never have a bad time when they’re on your feet. Related: time for a tale-of-the-tape-style breakdown of Transylvania Snowshoei

Snowshoes are like the roller skates of winter.

Underrated, but you never have a bad time when they’re on your feet.

Related: time for a tale-of-the-tape-style breakdown of Transylvania Snowshoeing & Winter Walking and Snowshoeing Week, two new trips that involve racquet-like footwear and powdery ice crystals, both booking now.

The Itinerary Highlights
Transylvania Snowshoeing: You’ll visit Europe’s largest sanctuary for brown bears, explore a bat cave by torchlight and stop by Dracula’s market for vampire-inspired souvenirs.
Snowshoeing Week: Day five is a designated “rest/choice day.” You can go ice climbing, husky sledding, relaxing or whatever it is the French Alps beckon you to do. Such an aptly named day. (The slideshow awaits.)

The Accommodations
Transylvania Snowshoeing: You’ll reside at Villa Hermani, a local family-run guesthouse within the boundaries of the Piatra Craiului National Park. Translation: not a haunted castle.
Snowshoeing Week: You’ve got options depending on departure date. Options like La Combe Fleurie, a picturesque bed-and-breakfast run by Donald and Agnes. They’re like old friends already.

The Nourishments
Transylvania Snowshoeing: Everything from hot plum brandy with a farmer to lunch with a shepherd to coffee and traditional cake at a fortified church.
Snowshoeing Week: Five picnic lunches. Also, the occasional steaming hot chocolate and mulled wine at a hidden high-altitude chalet.

Probably not in the same mug, though.
