Here’s where some of your refund is going...
Whitehall: the second coming of a historic hotel in the storybook seaport town of Camden, Maine, where you’re going to wear white linen pants and smile at lighthouses. It’s booking now for a May 10 reopening, and here’s the slideshow.
The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay was discovered in this hotel in 1912. If that means nothing to you, here:
“All I could see from where I stood was three long mountains and a wood.”
That was nice.
Anyway, it’s got rocking chairs and shuffleboard courts and a hidden courtyard with a pit for late-night bonfires. All the stuff you’d expect from a former sea captain’s house.
Drop your bags, survey the land of your king suite and take a sip of something with bubbles in it. When you’re ready, glide down the stairs and into the loving arms of the Surf Lodge vet who’s now the chef at the hotel’s restaurant, Pig + Poet. He’ll ply you with grilled clams and cowboy steaks. You’ll become happy.
And when you finally venture off hotel grounds, you’ll find plenty of Maine-y things to do like kayaking the harbor or hiking Mount Battie.
