First, you’ll want to get some nice stationery. Then, you’ll want to practice spelling “Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said.” Because that’s who you’ll need to thank for Alila Jabal Akhdar, a giant oasis of a hotel that just appeared in Oman’s highest mountain range simply because the sultan decreed it, taking reservations now. Looking around, it’s no wonder the guy exercised his ultimate authority to reserve this land for five-star habitation. You’re basically entering the Monument Valley of the Middle East, and you can only get there via 4x4. But when you do: nothing but towering cliffs, grazing goats and, at 6,500 feet above sea level, 84 suites’ worth of Arabian mountain-lodging beauty. As for which suite to claim: none of them. Because you’ll inevitably want one of the two villas, each of which’ll give you a private pool overlooking the gorge below. That’ll make a useful headquarters for trail wandering, stargazing and staring off into golden sunsets. And since the entire valley is basically one big rose garden, consider bringing along someone who appreciates beautiful flowers. No, not your florist. |
